Memphis Sanitation Strikers - “I Am a Man”

William (Bill) Lucy
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will honor the organizing leader of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strikers William (Bill) Lucy, at its 2018 Image Awards and Scholarship Banquet. The event will take place on April 28, 2018 at the Lone Tree Golf and Event Center, Antioch, California.
Raised in Richmond, California, Lucy studied civil engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in the 1950s and joined the U.S. Navy in 1951. Lucy who served as AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer for nearly 40 years, was a leader in organizing the Memphis sanitation workers in 1968, among his many other accomplishments in advancing the causes of social, racial and labor justice. He is also a co-founder of the Free south Africa Movement, founder of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist (CBTU). He is also recipient of the NAACP’s vaunted “Vanguard Award.”
Image Awards will also be presented to community members who have contributed continuously in the community in the fields of Education, Religion and Philanthropy.
